Álbum

Mutations is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Beck, released on November 3, 1998 by DGC Records. Though less commercially successful than the preceding Odelay, it won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Mutations was produced by Nigel Godrich, who was well-known at that point for his previous work with Radiohead. The album contains a number of Moog keyboards, acoustic guitars, and string arrangements. The production style was very different from that of his previous. Mutations - Beck. Mutations may not be Becks most consistant it's probably the most easy listening album he has released. For the most part Becks songwriting comes into the combining acoustic rock, blues, country and even latin. Of course, when Beck incorperates music styles, he usually does it on his terms. What you get is a typical Beck solid creative genrehopping on certain occasions. That's what you can expect from Mutations. 01 Cold Brains 03:41 This is a pretty solid opener. Before beginning the recording sessions, Beck gained permission from the major label he was under contract with, Geffen, to release Mutations on the small indie label Bong Load Records. However, when Geffen executives heard the album, they reneged on their agreement and released the record. This led to a lawsuit filed by Beck against Geffen. Singles were released for the songs Tropicalia, Cold Brains Australia and New Zealand only, and Nobody's Fault but My Own Japan only. No promotional music videos were made for any of the singles. According to party line, neither Beck nor Geffen ever intended Mutations to be considered as the official follow-up to Odelay, his Grammy-winning breakthrough. It was more like One Foot in the Grave, designed to be an off-kilter, subdued collection of acoustic-based songs pitched halfway between psychedelic country blues and lo-fi folk. There's now a grey vinyl version on the market (cat # BL39) - anyone know if this is a genuine re-release or a bootleg?

Late reaction but those colored vinyls are bootlegs from europe.

Can someone explain to me why the value of this record is so high? Was it truly limited in numbers? Were sales very low upon release? Because it was produced by Nigel Godrich? Because it's on a small indie label despite him being signed to a major at the time?Or did I just answer my own question (all of the above)?

A lot of vinyl from the 90's-00's is now really expensive because vinyl was not very popular at the time. Since there was not much of a demand, I take it it that most were released in small numbers. When vinyl gained steam and most artists started pressing their new albums to wax, I guess the new fans looked back and wanted vinyl of prior records. So when you have long time popular artists like Beck or REM with lots of fans, the releases start getting rare. It is puzzling, because so many people supposedly hate a lot of that era of REM, so shouldn't those releases be easy to find and affordable? In the CD version, undeniably so, but the vinyl is more scarce. I guess long time REM fans bought them anyways despite disliking the albums as a completists thing?Even little known bands who you can purchase probably every album of theirs on CD for the cost of shipping will have $100 LPs. It's crazy. Beck's Mutations and REM's Up are records that weren't very popular, but I like them. I will probably never own them on vinyl unless they are re-released.

Haha - fair enough! I just didn't know if I owned some sort of rarity.I hope I'm not lumped into that category! I only started collecting in the late 1990s / early 2000s. I bought this record new around that time.

Since the large increase of popularity in vinyl over the past few years, there are now a bunch of yuppie hipsters with more money then sense. Who continually keep driving up the prices. All it takes is for 1 copy to be sold at some ridiculous price, and then everyone thinks they should list theirs for the same or more. Sadly there are enough "collectors" out there that even at some of the crazy prices i see people listing at, they still sell. Which for myself, and probably most vinyl enthusiasts it's just taking all the fun out of the hobby, and making it nearly impossible to get anything decent for under $60. I remember only a couple years ago you go on here or ebay and get a first press Beck - Mellow gold in NM condition for around the $30 mark...
