John Campbell at Maybeck: Maybeck Recital Hall Series Volume 29 is an album of solo performances by jazz pianist John Campbell. The album was recorded at the Maybeck Recital Hall in Berkeley, California in May 1993. The eight tracks are performances of standards. Pianist John Campbell stretches out during the eight standards he performs during his Maybeck Recital Hall solo set. An exuberant player, Campbell often switches back and forth between two keys during a song sometimes during every chorus, a device he sometimes overuses. An up-tempo version of Emily is a particular surprise, and his explorations of Just Friends, You and the Night and the Music, and Easy to Love are particularly memorable. John Campbell 18 At Maybeck. In the early 1990s Concord released a slew of solo recitals in its Maybeck Recital Hall Series. While the series does not include some of the finest jazz soloists from that era - McCoy Tyner, Tommy Flanagan, Herbie Hancock, or Keith Jarrett, for instance - it does present a wonderful and balanced portrait of what was happening in the late 20th century. The pianists in this series demonstrate amazing chops and creativity within a wide range of jazz idioms. It's not too much to say that these recordings, as a group, present jazz piano at its finest. Pianist John Campbell, a powerful player who is creative within the tradition, is best known for his associations with Mel Torme and the Terry Gibbs-Buddy DeFranco quintet. He started piano lessons at seven, and in 1977 moved to Chicago. His trioquartet known originally as Campbell's Group was soon in demand to accompany touring artists including Eddie JeffersonRichie Cole, Eddie Harris, and James Moody and, in 1981, he toured Europe with Clark Terry. In 1993, Campbell recorded a solo disc for Concord Live at Maybeck Recital Hall, Vol. After a long hiatus, Workin' Out was issued eight years later. Scott Yanow
