Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet is a studio album by the Miles Davis quintet recorded in 1956 and released circa January 1960. Two sessions on May 11, 1956 and October 26 in the same year resulted in four albums-this one, Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet, Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet and Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet. Track 2 is a composition written for Davis by Eddie Vinson see Blue Haze for more details. Trane's Blues also known as Vierd Blues, a tongue-in-cheek. Trumpeter Miles Davis led several sessions for Prestige Records between November 1955 and October 1956 with his legendary first quintet, featuring tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The sessions represent an incomparable musical legacy. Workin' is the third in a series of four featuring the classic Miles Davis Quintet: Davis trumpet, John Coltrane tenor sax, Red Garland piano, and Philly Joe Jones drums. Like its predecessors Cookin' and Relaxin', Workin' is the product of not one - as mythology would claim - but two massively productive recording sessions in May and October of 1956, respectively. Tender lyricism and vulnerability. Workin With The Miles Davis Quintet used material from both trips to Van Gelders studio, but wasnt released until December 1959, following its sister albums Cookin released in July 1957 and Relaxin March 1958, which established an album title theme Steamin concluded the series in July 1961. Workin opens with It Never Entered My Mind, a Rodgers & Hart show tune that had been covered by Frank Sinatra in 1949 and which Miles first cut for Blue Note five years later. Red Garlands delicate arpeggios begin the. Songs in album Miles Davis - Workin' With The Miles Davis Quintet 1959. Miles Davis - It Never Entered My Mind. Miles Davis - Four. The Miles Davis Quintet 1965-'68: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings. Workin' is culled from the four albums worth of material recorded by Miles' then-current quintet during two sessions in 1956. The fact that there were no alternate takes makes this masterwork all the more incredible. The quintet included Miles, John Coltrane, Red Garland piano, Paul Chambers bass and Philly Joe Jones drums. Throughout the album, whenever Garland solos, the rhythm section jumps to the foreground-and while it is Garland who is soloing, it is very much a collective performance. The rest of the album is of the same quality. Perfect notes are rare in an improvised music such as jazz. On Workin', however, those moments of perfection are abundant
